Functional Capacity Development

Practical social work that builds skills, confidence and independence

Gold Coast Social Works supports adolescents aged 13 and over and adults. Functional Social Work focuses on the interaction between a person, their relationships, daily routines, support network and the environments in which everyday life happens.

Practical and measurable

How support is planned and reviewed

The aim is meaningful change in everyday life, not independence at any cost.

  1. Assess

Identify strengths, functional challenges, existing supports and personal goals.

  2. Build

Develop practical communication, emotional regulation, problem-solving and independence skills.

  3. Transfer

Work with families and support workers, with consent, so skills can be practised in everyday settings.

  4. Measure

Review progress against agreed goals, such as increased participation, confidence or reduced prompting.

Working together

Complementing your existing supports

Functional Social Work can work alongside psychology, occupational therapy, speech pathology and Positive Behaviour Support. My role is to bring a social work perspective, helping to connect the different parts of a person’s life and turn goals into practical strategies that work in everyday situations.

Where other professionals are involved, I value collaboration so that support is coordinated, clear and centred around what matters to you.

When another service should lead

Urgent safety concerns, severe self-injury, escalating aggression or immediate mental-health crisis require an appropriate urgent or specialist response. Complex behaviour support, communication systems, sensory needs or psychological treatment may require another discipline to lead or co-manage.
